George M. Yakovich, 86, of Rock Island, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church, or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Mr. Yakovich was born April 11, 1921, in Rathbun, Iowa, a son of Frank and Albina Morris Yakovich. He married Helen A. Radosevich on Aug. 10, 1946, in Centerville, Iowa.
George was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and served with the 82nd Airborne. He received a Bronze Star and three Battle Stars. He was shop chief for the Illinois National Guard at the Rock Island Armory. He retired in 1981 after 36 years of service. In early years, he worked for the International Harvester Corp. Farmall Works.
He was a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church and now St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island. George was also a member of the Allouez Council 658 Knights of Columbus, the Croatian Crest Club and a life member of the 82nd Airborne. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame fan.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Helen; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Badley and Brian Morris, Davenport, Barbara Hills-Ellis and Bert Ellis, Andalusia, Teresa and Gary Kolls, Andalusia, and Pamela Yakovich, Rock Island; sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Debbie Yakovich, Andalusia, and Richard and Pam Yakovich, Rock Island; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Teresa Tometich, Moline.
