Henrietta stayed with her son-in-law Herman Hartjen, after the death of her daughter Charlotte (lung fever) to help care for the family. When Herman's son Fred was married they were building a large frame house when she fell on the temporary basement steps, broke her hip and became an invalid. She was confined for the next eight years to a bed set up in the "parlor" of the new house. She kept herself busy with handwork- knitting, sewing and helping with the family mending. Despite being in terrible pain with her unset hip and bedsore ridden body she never complained.
