Marie attended school in Dove Creek and Dolores and then went on to earn several advanced college degrees. She worked in Washington DC during WWII and later moved to California where she married Lyle Tobin. To this union a son, Terry, was born. They were later divorced.
Marie started her career by teaching school at the one room school in Cross Canyon where she was responsible for teaching, cleaning and keeping the wood stove going. Marie continued teaching and later became the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Dolores County. She later moved to Denver and taught school for the next five years. Marie then moved to the Bahamas and married the "Love of her life", Buz Grubbs. She taught school on the Island for three years while Buz chartered sailboats. They they returned to Dove Creek where she taught third grade. Between 1980 and 1982, Marie became Superintendent of Schools for Dolores County. In 1982 Marie and Buz moved to Fruita CO, where they became involved in community affairs and spent their time traveling the world. In all her travels, Marie always considered Dove Creek to be her home and the place closest to her heart.
Marie is survived by her son, Terry Tobin (Sandra), two sisters, Callie Cowling of Clifton CO and Margie Wilson (JE) of Dove Creek, brother, Robert Baird (Dorma), sister-in-law, Beverly Baird, grandson Britt Tobin (Mikki) and several nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Buz Grubbs, her brother, Edward Baird and her granddaughter Paula Tobin.
Marie has been cremated and a grave side memorial will occur at a later date.
