Third child and first son of Thomas Lovelace Gorsuch and Ellin Chapmann of Baltimore, MD. Born at Lovelace Plantation. In 1810 he married Jane Hamilton, but she lived only a year. He then enlisted in the army, being a private soldier in the War of 1812. he served with Capt Steven's Company, 27th Regiment. After the war, being widowed and restless,he decided to travel west. He stopped for some time at Independence Township, (Washington) PA ,where, needing some work, he offered to help Isaac Manchester finish his 15 room manor house "Plantation Plenty." There he met Isaac's daughter Phoebe and the following year they were married. The marriage was against her parent's wishes, so the couple moved on west to Jefferson County, Ohio. In time Isaac did forgive his daughter and he bought her a beautiful home in Smithfield Ohio. There Thomas and Phoebe had six children. Thomas was an artisan, gunsmith and farmer. Phoebe was the third great granddaughter of Edward Gray of Rhode Island. Three generations after she married Thomas, her 3-great granddaughter would marry into the Gray line again...to a descendant of that very same Edward Gray of Rhode Island.
