Stephen Jules Epler graduated from Johnson County Nebraska High School in 1901. Graduated Cotner University in 1905.

Ministered at Fairfield Christian Church for about 5 years, having previously served four years at the church at Brooklyn, Iowa and the same length of time at West Liberty, Iowa. Miss Blanche Parmenter of Bethany became his wife in 1906. He attributes much of his success in the ministry to her. (From "Histroy of Cotner University", Moomaw, p. 255.)

In 1917 Reverend Epler was called to be pastor of the Alliance, Nebraska First Christian Church and served for almost seven years. During his pastorate he purchased the portion of the church lot not occupied by the Church and built a home for his family. This residence was later purchased from the Eplers by the church to be used as a parsonage. It was also during Bro. Epler's ministry that a serious fire broke out in the church necessitating an extensive project of repair and alteration. Rev. Epler was followed as pastor by H. A. Wingard from January to June 1924. The Epler family is mentioned several times in the "Pioneer Mother" by Lillie Belle Parmenter and mother of Claudia Blanche Parmenter. Several trips to churches pastored by Stephen J. are recounted, including one in August, 1920 to Alliance when she married her second husband, John Wesley Horn, with Stephen J. officiating.

He was also a minister at Norton, Kansas for several years.
