Charles Gillooly Dies in Hunding Accident.

Charles Andrew Gillooly of 320 North 11, St. in Murphysboro was fatally injured by the accidental discharge of a .22 calibre rifle, while he was rabbit hunding with his brother William, on the latter's farm on route 1 near Ava. The accident occured about 10 am on Thursday, Dec. 23, 1965.

According to information learned during an investigation of the incident by the Jackson County Sheriff's office, Charles Gillooly was handing the rifle to his brother William, when the gun was accidentally discharged. The bullet penetrated the victim's body through the right side of his chest.

Authorities said the victim had shot and hit a rabbit and dried to fire again when the gun apparently jammed. He handed the gun, stock first to his brother, Bill Gillooly when it discharged, the full charge striking Charles in the chest.

Charles Andrew Gillooly was born in Murphysboro on Sept. 27, 1919, the son of James and Katherine Puttman Gillooly. We served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Local 160 of the Labor and Hod Carriers Union, and the Veterans of Foriegn Wars, Post 7190, at the time of his death. The deceased was married to the former Ruby G. Beasley in Murphysboro on Nov. 9, 1941.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ruby G. Beasley of Murphysboro, two daughters, Mrs. Charlene McMannis and Miss Brenda Sue Gillooly, both of Murphysboro; three sisters, Mrs.Katherine Koenig of Murphysboro, Mrs. Thelma Huppert of Carbondale, and Mrs. Mary King of Carbondale, four brothers, Bill, Gene, Robert and Jim Gillooly, all of Murphysboro. He is also survived by one grandson. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

The funeral service was conducted at the Meyer-Denny Funeral Home in Murphysboro at 2pm on Monday Dec 27, with burial being made in St. Andrew's Cemetery.
