RICHARD NEWTON BUCKLEY
1874 - 1957
Richard Newton Buckley was born December 14, 1874 in Gerard, Sterling County, Illinois. He married Octavia Lou Turner in 1901 in Paducah, Texas. She was the daughter of Thomas Elliott and Nancy Gillentine Turner. They were the parents of four children, Roy, Elroe E., Lois and Pearl Buckley.
Richard Newton came to Weatherford, Texas in 1884. He had an uncle in Weatherford. Richard went to Tarrant County in 1888 for five years. He came to Cottle County in 1893 and went to work at the 3D Ranch. He was married in 1901. He started farming in 1910 in Vivian, Texas. Richard bought the home place in 1917. He moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1937.
Pop "Newt" went to work on McAdams Ranch (later known as Triangle Ranch). McAdams would go to Dallas and buy fancy dresses for parties. He would invite ladies to come and dress up in the fancy dresses for the parties. It is assumed the girls entertained the cowboys on the ranch at the parties. Pop played the fiddle for the parties. Since Nannie lived a few miles away at Vivian (west of Crowell towards Paducah), they probably spied one another at one of the parties.
Richard Newton, better known as "Newt" cowboyed, farmed, carpentered and played the fiddle for dances. He last farmed off the Paducah, Quanah Hwy 2 miles S.W. of Swearingen, Texas. In 1937 he retired and moved to Tucson, Arizona and lived there until he died in 1957.
When Newt moved to Arizona, he bought Dr. Looney's home, and he and his family took the house apart board by board, identified each board and where it went, and he took the house with him.
For awhile out in Tucson, Newt ran a Conoco Gas Station.
It was said that Newt and Octa Lou were Mormons, and every morning and every night he and Nannie said their prayers in the bedroom.
