Haigh, Alberta Sears Huckins

NEWPORT NEWS - Alberta Sears Huckins Haigh, 81, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006. Alberta was born in Arlington on July 11, 1925. While growing up, she lived at Maury Place in Norfolk, Hilton Village in Newport News, and Ferguson Cove in Blount Point. In 1952, Alberta married Tony, originally from England. They moved to Queens in 1956 and later to Blauvelt, N.Y., where she was a resident for 20 years. It was in Blauvelt where they raised four children. She was an active member of the Greenbush Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school. In 1977, Alberta moved to Williamsburg, where she attended Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. She later moved to the Hampton/Newport News area, was most recently a resident of The Chesapeake Retirement Community and was a member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church. Alberta was affectionately known as 'Berta' to her family and friends. She was a loving sister, mother, and grandmother, whose quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Anthony 'Tony' Haigh, and her brother, Earl Knowlen Huckins Jr. Survivors include her sister, Phyllis Haughton of Topping; four children, Charles Anthony of New York City, Michael Stephen of Carrollton, Richard Paul of York County, and Barbara Allison Haigh Anderson of Rockland County, N.Y.; their partners and spouses, Byron Jianhua Wu, Barbara Haigh, Diana Haigh, and Craig Anderson; grandchildren, Stephen Anthony Haigh, Paul Anthony Haigh, Kyle Charles Anderson, Jonathan Michael Haigh, Joshua Ryan Haigh, Sarah Kathryn Haigh, Taylor Rae Anderson, and Teresa Lynn Yarkey and her husband, James; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kristina, and Lauren Yarkey. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Peninsula Funeral Home followed by funeral service at 5 p.m. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Peninsula Memorial Park.
