John Jacob Walk was the son of Joseph Alexander Walk and Mary Olive Crandall. He married Emilene "Emma" Davis in Liberty, Clay County, MO. She was born 1849 in Virginia, and died April 1937 in Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana.
JOHN WALK when a young man he headed into the west finally locating at Hugo, Colorado, where he became interested in sheep and cattle business. At this time, buffalo hunting in Colorado was easy and profitable and Mr. WALK says that one winter he killed 600 just for their hides. a buffalo bull hide brought $2.50, a cow hide $l.75 and a buffalo calf skin 40 cents. Early in 1879, WALK became restless and with his wife, whom he married in Missouri in 1871, went overland on horseback to Oregon. There he bought a herd of range cattle at $17 per head with the calves included on the purchase without charge. But Oregon was not particularly adapted for cattle raising and WALK once more decided to change his residence for better country. It was at this time he heard about the Yellowstone valley and started for Montana early in August. Coming from Oregon on the trail it took six men to handle the herd and only five or six miles were made in a day. The cattle got very thin on the trip, he said. The Yellowstone was reached late in the fall and the cattle were turned on the range in the Lake Basin. "Right below us on the creek where CALAMITY JANE wintered that year with her husband". MR WALK recalls, "we knew her very well. CALAMITY cooked and helped her husband cut cordwood and made fence posts which they sold". "CALAMITY was a big-hearted person."
