Israel Chapin
Birth: Dec. 4, 1740
Worcester
Worcester County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Mar. 7, 1795

Revolutionary War General. At the direction of George Washington, he summoned the Canandaigua Council, which led to the signing, on November 11, 1794, of the Canandaigua Treaty, the final treaty between the six nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and the United States Government. The general died a few months after the signing of the treaty at age 54, and Seneca chief Red Jacket gave a moving condolence speech at his graveside. (bio by: Kristen Conrad)
