SOM EUGENE MEDFORD- was born September 21, 1918 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas, and died September 22, 1996 in Huntsville, Texas. He married MATTIE BEA PRATHER , daughter of IRA PRATHER and JEWELL BAXTER.

Houston Chronicle Wednesday, Sept. 25 1996 - Isom Eugene "Gene" Medford passed away at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston on Sunday September 22, 1996. "Gene" was born in Van Alstyne, Texas, the son of Isom Garrett and Josie Bell Walker Medford on September 21, 1918. He joined the Church of Christ in Gunter, Texas when he was thirteen years of age, and graduated from Van Alstyne High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1935. He attended North Texas State Teachers College graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in 1939. Prior to World War II he taught school in Burnet and Bowie, Texas. He was accepted into a special fellowship study program for meteorology in the Army Air Corp. at the start of World War II and received a Masters Degree, Ph.D. course work and commission. He later served as a weather officer in Harlingen, Texas, Hawaii, Guam and Okinawa. After the war he taught school in Huntsville, Texas prior to accepting a position with United State Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. and later in New York. He transferred to the Weather bureau Office in Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans, and retiring as Principal in Charge at Houston in 1983. Upon retirement he received the Bronze Medal of Excellence in Performance from the Federal Government. Also upon retirement he became a very active volunteer for the City Library of Huntsville,Texas and researched widely in genealogy. Memberships over the years included the Lions Club, Texas Meteorology Society, AARR, Retired Federal Government Employees, Friends of the Library in Huntsville, Texas and the Genealogical Society. His survivors include his wife, Mattie Bea Prather Medford; son Richard Prather Medford and wife Julie Ann, grand-daughter Corin Kathleen; grandson Thomas Edward Childs Medford, sister Dorothy and husband Dr. J. D. Murphree; sisters-in-law , Rachel Prather Allen and husband Forest, and Eleanor Prather Dube and husband Lawrence; nephews Dan Murphree, Roger Murphree; nieces Linda Gale Backus, Kay Bohne and Lawren Ann Rives. Funeral services at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday September 25, 1996 in the Huntsville Funeral Home Chapel, with internment in Fairfield City Cemetery, Fairfield, Texas at 4:00 P.M.
