Raymond H. Gunther, age 88, formally of Lakefield, passed away on July 25, 2011 at Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake.
A funeral service for Ray will be on Thursday, July 28 2011 at 10:30 A.M at St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena with Reverend James Albrecht officiating.
Friends and family may visit on Wednesday evening from 5PM to 7PM at the Osterberg Hansen Funeral Home in Lakefield and again one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Burial will be at Lakefield City Cemetery.
Raymond Harold Gunther, son of Harry and Margaret (Knuth) Gunther was born at home in Ewington Township, Jackson County, Minnesota on February 26, 1923.
He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. He attended elementary school at Ewington School, and graduated from Okabena High School. He farmed for an area farmer until joining the Navy. When he returned home he married Lorraine Gade on April 15, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena. The couple had three sons together, Gary, Kevin, and Robert.
Ray continued to farm in Jackson County until 1974 when he and Lorraine moved to Lakefield. Ray was a rural mail carrier for 30 plus years and earned many awards for his job. He retired from the postal service in 1996 to take care of Lorraine until she moved into the nursing home in 2002.
Ray was a dedicated and faithful husband to Lorraine, visiting her every day until her death on August 23, 2007. Ray became a resident of Lakeview Assisted Living on May 5, 2009, where he remained until his passing on July 25, 2011 at the age of 88 years, four months, and 29 days.
Ray was a long time member at St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena. There he was very involved in the church council and as a church officer. Ray was a hard working and honest man. He enjoyed doing yard work, farming, and gardening. He would lend a helping hand to any neighbor that was in need. For many years Ray and Lorraine enjoyed ballroom dancing and bowling together.
Left to cherish Ray's memory are his three sons, Gary (Jean) Gunther of Monticello, MN, Kevin Gunther of Owatonna, MN and Robert (Jill McCartney) Gunther of Topeka, KS, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Also, surviving Ray are two sisters, Harriet Shade of Minneapolis, and Arlene Baumann of Windom and a half sister Carol Bonney Smith of Denver, CO.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of sixty years Lorraine, a sister Elvira Krog Hollfers.
