Grammy and Handy award-winning blues guitarist Johnny Copeland died Thursday at a New York hospital. He was 60. Copeland died of complications from his eighth open heart surgery, which was performed last week. The surgery was to repair a valve in a transplanted heart. Known as the 'Texas Twister' for his distinctive style of playing, Copeland played the Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival as well as the W. C. Handy Blues Awards at the Orpheum in May. Copeland's set at the Handy Awards was his first major performance since his heart transplant Jan. 1. Copeland won a Grammy in 1985 for best traditional blues recording for his collaboration with fellow blues guitarists Robert Cray and Albert Collins on the CD 'Showdown!' Through the years, Copeland won four Handy Awards. He also was honored by the French National Academy of Jazz and the Montreux Jazz Festival."
