Birth: Jan. 20, 1910
Death: Mar. 3, 1994

A. E. 'Ozy' Blumberg, retired partner in Berl Olswanger Music Inc. and former owner-operator of the old Berl Olswanger Music Store on Union, died of heart failure Thursday at Baptist Memorial Hospital East. He was 84. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Park. Mr. Blumberg was a Memphis-based violinist in professional society orchestras and big bands, volunteer community orchestras and restaurants for more than 40 years. He was closely associated with the late Noel Gilbert, who founded and conducted several orchestras in the city. One of these was the Memphis Concert Orchestra, which played in Overton Park with Mr. Blumberg as a member for 20 years. In the 1970s Mr. Blumberg played in the Germantown Symphony which Gilbert had founded. "The amazing thing about Ozy was his versatility," said Joan Gilbert, Noel's daughter, a professional pianist, amateur violinist and Memphis State University music professor. Years ago, Gilbert and Mr. Blumberg often shared the same music stand during orchestra concerts. "He played every kind of music and loved it all. He also loved people. I don't know which he loved more. He had a vibrant personality, was always enthusiastic and always had a funny joke," she said. Mr. Blumberg was former minister of music at the Seventh Street Baptist Church and Poplar Avenue Baptist Church. He was a member of Merton Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Blumberg, the husband of Ann Austin Blumberg, also leaves three daughters, Anna Blumberg Baker of Costa Mesa, Calif., Janis Blumberg Truex of Jackson, Tenn., and Linda Blumberg Caughron of Memphis; a brother, Ludwig Blumberg of Wheaton, Ill., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
