Mississippi, Olive Branch - Walter Joseph Burnett, 86, went to be home with the Lord on August 29, 2009 while at home. He was the son of Walter Joseph and Mary Garrett Burnett born April 5, 1923 in Memphis. He was preceded in death by his sister Marian Wilson and his brother William Russell Burnett. He was a graduate of Whitehaven High School. During the war he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 9 years. He then graduated from Tennessee State Teachers College, now the University of Memphis. He taught for 30 years in the Shelby County School system at Germantown High School along the way graduating from the University of Mississippi achieving his Masters in music. He was a fine musician playing his clarinet and saxophone all over Memphis as a member of The Doctors Band, The Shrine Band and The Bill Jordan Band, his favorite. He sang in the Choir at Eudora Baptist Church, where he was a member. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He traveled the United States via his BMW motorcycles making trips from Key West, FL to Alaska and all points in between. He leaves his beloved wife of 61 years, Margaret Davis Burnett, two daughters, Ann and husband Mike Collins and Susie and husband Steve Melone; a grand daughter, Melanie and husband David Knight whom he treated as a daughter and grandson Nathan Melone, two great grandchildren Taylor and Avery Knight. The family will receive visitors Wednesday, September 2 from 12-1 P.M. with a memorial service to follow at 1 P.M. both at Eudora Baptist Church. In accordance with his wishes, his remains will be distributed at a special place at Pickwick. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Eudora Baptist Church, 4684 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38117. Family Funeral Care (Published in The Commercial Appeal on September 1, 2009)
