Dr. James Francis McFarlane was born the son of David L. and Margaret McFarlane. After completing high school, he received his degree in Veterinary Medicine. He married Hazel Guindon and they made their home in Plankinton. He began his veterinary practice there in 1917 and then answered the call for service in World War I, serving in the Army Veterinary Corps. He was a past president of the South Dakota Veterinary Association. He was a member of the WWI Barracks at Mitchell and a member of the Elks Club there as well. He was accorded full military rites at the graveside by American Legion Post No.5
