Kenneth Gifford Freeman was born January 23, 1899 at Independence, Iowa the son of Ledyard Moore & Clara Augusta Gray. He attended the local schools and graduated from Independence High School. After graduating he entered the U.S. Army and served during WWI.
Kenneth was united in marriage to Marion Taylor on June 20, 1923 at the family home. They farmed in Buchaanan County until 1950 when they moved to Sumner. They farmed at Sumner for five years after which they moved to Winthrop where they owned and operated Freeman's Drug and Sundries for ten years. Marian entered into her eternal rest on November 11, 1966. Kenneth moved to Shell Knob, Missouri in 1968 where he could enjoy the lakeand woods in his retirement years. In 1980 declining health caused him to return to Winthrop to be near his family.Kenneth was united in marriage to Fern Rathbun on September 29, 1982 at the Church of Chrsit United in Winthrop.
Kenneth was a memberof the Church of Christ United, the Masonic Lodge, and the American Legion.
Kenneth entered into his eternal rest on Wednesday, December 28, 1988 at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence following a short illness. He was 89 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marion, one grandson Douglas, and one stillborn great grandchild.
He is survived by his wife Fern of winthrop, three sons: George of Sumner, Richard of Fairfax, and Earl of Waterloo; one daughter Kathryn (Lester C.) Fawcett; four stepchildren: robert Flickinger of lynchburg, Virginia; Milton Flickinger of Washington, Iowa; Betty (Wayne) Fonken of Carbondale, Colorado; and Helen (Wayne) Tucker of Oelwein; thirteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, sixteen step grandchildren, thirteen step great children, many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 1988 at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop with Rev. Janice Springer officiating. Organist was Enid Walter. Casket bearers were Richard Svoboda, Mark Sanderson, Alan VanOverbeke, Greg Fawcett, Charles Frost, Brian Christensen, and Joseph Zabel. Military graveside services were conducted at Fairview Cemetery in Winthrop by American Legion Post #560 of Winthrop.
