From the notes of Brenda Bowden Eichmiller, John Henry's granddaughter:

"John Henry Bowden was a veteran of the Spanish American War. He served in Co. M, 3rd TN Infantry, entering service as a Pvt. and leaving as a Sgt. My Aunt Mary Nell Bowden Meade, his daughter, told me that 'he was mustered out at Oliver Springs, TN.' I plan to find out more about his service record (5/11/1998).

"August 23, 1998--I recently checked the 1880 Georgia Census and found John H. Bowden as a 4-year-old son of Lewis Bowden and Mary E. Bowden. It was for Gilmer County, Town Creek, Georgia. I will place this information in the source for his birth.

"The following was taken from The Logan Banner newspaper:

"'J.H. BOWDEN, 65, SUCCUMBS--J.H. Bowden,65, of Holden, retired employee of Island Creek Coal Co., died at 12:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lonnie Meade, after an illness of about three months. Bowden, well-known in Logan County for his woodcarving, worked for the coal company about 23 years before he retired four years ago. He spent 28 years working for coal companies in Tennessee, making a total of 51 years he had devoted to that industry. A native of Georgia, Bowden was also a veteran of the Spanish American War, the war being the only event that ever caused him to leave the coal fields. Upon his retirement, he devoted his time to wood carving and carved many canes and gavels out of woods native to Logan County. He married Miss Icie Oaks in 1899. She died several years ago. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Meade, Howard Bowden of Holden, and Herb Bowden of Knoxville, Tenn. Six grandchildren also survive. Military funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon. Arrangements, in charge of the Logan Funeral Home, are incomplete.'

"I found the following obituary article in the 'Leaves of Gold Memorial' booklet from John Henry Bowden's funeral:

"'FUNERAL SERVICES FOR JOHN HENRY BOWDEN SUNDAY--Funeral services for John Henry Bowden, 65, of Holden, who died Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter Mrs. Lonnie Meade, will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Holden Union Church. The Rev. George H. Huber, pastor, and the Rev. Harrison Maynard will officiate. Burial, with the Logan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements, will follow in the Whitman Cemetery. Bowden was a former employee of the Island Creek Coal Company, but retired four years ago after 51 years of labor around coal mines. He was a native of Fannon County, Georgia, and was the son of Lewis Jasper and Mary Bowden. He worked in Tennessee for about 27 years before coming to Holden 24 years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Meade; two sons, Herbert Bowden of Knoxville, Tennessee and Howard of Holden, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Frank Rose of Huntington, Mrs. Lula Mikels of Hager Hill, Ky., Mrs. Ova Jaynes of Harlan, Ky., Bea Bowden of Russell, Ky., Gus Bowden of Herst, Ill., William Bowden of Cadiz, Ohio, and Morgan, whose address is unknown. The deceased was a veteran of the Spanish American War. Since his retirement he had devoted much of his time to wood carving, a hobby that had won him recognition throughout Logan county.'

"(One factual error in this article is the name Bea Bowden-it should read Ben Bowden, a known sibling of John Henry Bowden). This newspaper clipping was not dated and had no heading to denote a newspaper title."
