"Uncle Mack" Carroll
(88) died Sun May 8, 2011 . He was born as Matthew Carroll to Matt Carroll and Sarah Etna Prather Carroll on May 11, 1922 in Woodford County. In 1940, at the age of 17 he joined the Army to serve in the 1st Armor Division, where he served under General Clark's 5th Army Brigade in North Africa and Italy, until 1945. He was awarded three medals for his service in World War II, including a bravery medal for rescuing a fellow soldier from a burning tank. Two children survive him, Tom Farquar and Barbara Pritchett. Also two grandsons, Thomas and Carlton Farquhar in Greensboro, N.C. He lived most of his life in Elgin, Illinois with his (deceased) wife Mary Ann Kelly Carroll. Mack thoroughly enjoyed music and nature. He loved to sing, watch birds, flowers, and God's creation. And what a sense of humor- for he always had a joke to say!! And a very special thanks to the VA staff who lovingly took great care of him. You will be missed so much. May God Richly Bless You, MACK, in your new palace!! Services will be 1:30 P.M. Wed. May 11, 2011 at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Donations may be made to the local VFW chapter.
