The Rev. Thomas J. Carberry, 63, was the pastor of St. Anne's in Southboro, when he died in St. Vincent's Hospital, Worcester. He had been a patient there for a month before his death.
Fr. Carberry was born in Worcester, the son of James F. and Mary (Reynolds) Carberry. He had graduated from Holy Cross in 1929 and studied for the priesthood at St Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained in 1933 by Bishop O'Leary of the Diocese of Springfield, MA (before Worcester was its own diocese).
Fr. Carberry served as a curate at St. Mary's Church in Milford, St. Patrick's in Whitinsville and at St. Peter's in Worcester, before being named as the pastor of the new St. Andrew the Apostle parish in 1955. While the church was being built, weekly Masses were celebrated in the former Park Theater on Mill St. That year, the First Communion liturgy was held at the Cathedral on June 5, 1955 and then the group photo was taken at the movie theater. After serving as the pastor at St. Andrew's, Father Carberry was the pastor at St. Anne's in Southboro for five years.
At the time of his death, he left two brothers, the Rev. Francis Carberry, pastor of Holy Angels in Upton, and the Rev. Maj. Paul A Carberry, a chaplain recently returned from Viet Nam and stationed at Fort Campbell, KY; two sisters, Sister Mary Letitia of the Sisters of Notre Dame of St. Joseph's Convent, Somerville and Mrs. Laetitia Gaidis of Worcester, a niece and a nephew.
