Bruce C. Martinson, age 52, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2009, peacefully in his home under the care of hospice following a courageous battle with cancer. Bruce was born July 9, 1957 in Fargo, ND to Harold and Edith (Livingston) Martinson. He was raised in Fargo and attended school and subsequently graduated from Fargo South High in 1975. Following High School graduation, Bruce enlisted in the Army for three years and was selected to attend Airborne training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, followed by an assignment as paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and with the 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Infantry at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Completing his Army tour, Bruce returned to Fargo, enrolled and later graduated from North Dakota State University (NDSU).
During attendance at NDSU, Bruce served in the North Dakota National Guard and the Minnesota National Guard where he received an early commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Reserve Officer Training Course (ROTC). After graduating from NDSU, Bruce returned to the Army as an Infantry Officer and served in numerous assignments throughout the years. In 1991, Bruce was selected to attend the Foreign Area Officer (FAO) program, which was a total emergence study in French language and a program to complete his Masters Degree at the Naval Post Graduate in National Security Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies. Completing company command, Bruce was selected to attend the Defense Language Institute (DLI) and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) for a degree in National Security Affairs with emphasis in Middle Eastern Affairs. Bruce was then given a follow-on assignment to Morocco in 1993, where he attended the Moroccan Command and Staff College that was taught in total French emergence. During the first year, training included visits to Middle Eastern countries, where his studies included numerous countries to include Tunisia, Egypt, and Israel. Upon completion, Bruce was assigned to the American Embassy in Rabat, Morocco. While attending the Command and Staff College in Morocco, Bruce met the love of his life Beth Jones. In July 1995, Bruce and Beth were joined in marriage in Gibraltar, UK. Following their marriage, Bruce and Beth made their home in a number of overseas locations and the Commonwealth of Virginia. During this time, Bruce and Beth were blessed with two wonderful children; Kailey born in March 1998 and Kaleb born in November 2000. Bruce and Beth have made their home in Fargo, ND, since 2004.
Bruce loved woodworking, motorcycles, and hunting. Additionally, Bruce was a member of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign War (VFW).
Bruce is survived by his wife Beth; two children, Kailey and Kaleb; his father, Harold Martinson, West Fargo; Brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Bev Martinson, Fargo; numerous nephews, aunts, uncles; and Beth's parents, Duane and Betty Jones, Union City, PA.
Bruce was proceeded in death by is Mother, Edith Gress and his sister, Dawn Martinson; Stepmother, Virginia, Grandparents, and numerous aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have memorials sent to Roger Maris Cancer Center and Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo, ND
Visitation: Will be held at First United Methodist Church, Thursday, December 17, 2009, from 5-7 PM, and one hour prior to the service.
Funeral: Friday, December 18, 2009, at 1 PM, at First United Methodist Church, 906 1st Ave. S., Fargo, ND.
Burial: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA
