Blanche Honegger Moyse
Birth: Sep. 23, 1909
Geneva
Geneve, Switzerland
Death: Feb. 10, 2011
Brattleboro
Windham County
Vermont, USA

Musician. A violinist-turned-conductor, she was perhaps her generation's foremost exponent of the choral works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Raised in Geneva, she began violin study at five, trained with violinist Adolf Busch from age 12, received a Geneva Conservatory doctorate at 16, and made her professional bow with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto. Around the start of World War II she married pianist Louis Moyse (divorced 1970s, deceased 2007) and joined with him and his father flutist Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) to form the much-praised Moyse Trio. In 1949 the Moyse family moved to Marlboro, Vermont, at the invitation of Maestro Busch and pianist Rudolf Serkin; there, Mrs. Moyse chaired the music department at Marlboro College for 25 years, co-founded both the Marlboro Music Festival and the Brattleboro Music Center, and continued a busy performing schedule until a 1966 injury ended her violin playing days. Long fascinated with Bach, she turned to conducting, specializing in the great composer's choral works. Mrs. Moyse founded the New England Bach Festival in 1969 and the Blanche Moyse Chorale in 1978, over the years performing and recording the "B-minor Mass", the "St. Matthew Passion", the "St. John Passion", and other works. Her Carnegie Hall debut came in 1987 when she led her own ensemble and the Orchestra of St. Luke's in an acclaimed reading of Bach's "Christmas Oratorio". Her honors were several including at least five honorary doctorates and the 2000 Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award. Active well into her 90s, she last conducted at the Marlboro Festival in 2001 and at the New England Bach Festival in 2004. At her death a number of recordings featuring her Bach interpretations were available. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
