THE HUGO DAILY NEWS, MONDAY, AUGUST 8, 1960, EASTERWOOD SERVICES TO BE WEDNESDAY
Funeral services for J. A. Easterwood, 90, a long-time resident of Choctaw County, are set for 2:30 Wednesday afternoon in Ft. Towson Baptist church, the Rev. Bill Golden, of Hugo Choctaw Baptist Church and Mrs. Johnnie Moore, officiating. Burial will be made in that Ft. Towson cemetery by Coffey Funeral Home.
Mr. Easterwood died Sunday in Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired farmer-stockman and widely known in the area.
Mrs. Easterwood was born in Gadsden, Ala. August 24, 1869. He was reared in that state but moved to Telephone, Tex., as a lad of 16. There he operated a general store, farmed, trapped and sold furs for the next 25 years.
He moved to Choctaw county when he was 41 years old, coming here to do commercial fishing in the Kiamichi river and to farm.
He married Miss Nora Dunn, who lived in the Ft. Towson area, and they moved to their own farm, on which they resided most of the remainder of their lives.
In his years of farm operation Mr. Easterwood acquired and operated almost 1,200 acres of land before retiring and disposing of his holdings.
In his later years he returned to one of his earlier businesses - commercial fishing, trapping and buying and selling of fur pelts. He was a lover of mink furs from boyhood, he said, and could never resist buying a mink pelt regardless of markets or condition of the fur.
He was keenly interested in politics and for a number of years annually entertained political candidates of the county in mid-campaign time with a fish fry, to which the public was also invited.
Mr. Easterwood was a Baptist church member.
He is survived by his wife, and these sons and daughters, Billy Easterwood, Mrs. Rosie Lang, Mrs. William Cawley; all of Ft. Towson, James E. Easterwood, Dallas; Mrs. Eugene Adams, Carthage, Tex.; Mrs. W. W. Latham, Ft. Worth, Tex.; and Elmer Easterwood, Benicia, Calif. Also survivng are 32 other descendants.
