Hazel passed away December 2, 2005 after a brief illness at the age of 83. A lifelong resident of Alameda County, she was preceded in death by husbands William Stack, Morris Sorensen, Jr., and Morris M. Wade and brother Donald L. Burke. She is survived by her children, Cindy Roderick of Martinez, Joanne Matney of Antioch, Neil Sorensen of Orangevale, Dean Sorensen of Hayward, and Kathryn Sorensen of San Francisco. She was a foster parent for over nine years, caring for over 43 foster babies.
Hazel was a valuable and central member of a number of organizations, dedicating her life to serving her community. For over 65 years, Hazel was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star and International Order of Rainbow for Girls, where she held many offices and received numerous commendations for exemplary service. A Rainbow Girl herself, Hazel acted as a Mother Advisor for many of the girls, as well as a Grand Deputy to the State of California.
Over the past 16 years, Hazel held many offices and extensively participated in activities and organizations at Spanish Ranch Mobile Home Park. During the 1960s and 1970s, Hazel was a librarian and teacher's aide at Marshall Elementary School of Castro Valley. Hazel was a 1940 graduate of Oakland's Castlemont High School and a member of Millsmont Cultural Society. She was a 1943 graduate of Oakland's Highland Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse and served as President of the Alumnae Association.
She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, friend and so much more to so many people, touching so many lives throughout her life, and continues to do so.
