According to the miniseries, he had supposedly never recovered from a "neck wound," and died in Philadelphia in 1948, his family would later correct this error, stating that it was a shoulder wound he received, not, as the series had stated, a neck wound, Blithe received two Purple Hearts for this action.
He served with distinction from 1942 to 1967, having fought in Korea, and earning a MAAG assignment in Tiawan.
He died while on active duty in Germany, at the age of 44.
He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
