MAN KILLED WHEN STRUCK BY TRAIN
An elderly city man was found dead along Penn Central tracks in the city Sunday morning. Officials said he apparently was struck by a train.
Ernest Kuenzli, 72, of 924 N. Lime St.
The victim's wife, Mrs. Zelda Kuenzli, reported to city police at 10:45 a.m. Sunday her husband left the house sometime during the night and did not return. She told police that he was ill.
AT PLUM STREET
At 11:19 a.m., a Penn Central security official informed police he had discovered a body along the tracks at the Plum Street overpass.
Police discovered the body lying on the track bed with injuries to the head and body. Dr. Thomas Quinn examined the body and ordered it removed to Conestoga View. Dr. Newton Kendig, county corner, ruled accidental death.
Police said there were no signs of foul play and a large amount of money was found on the body.
The railroad official said he searched for and finally found the body after he received a report by a train crew from Harrisburg about 6:00 a.m. that they had spotted it while passing through Lancaster.
Railroad officials inspected two train engines in Harrisburg bur failed to find evidence that they had struck a human.
The railroad official speculated that Kuenzli had walked into the side of a moving train.
He was born in Uster, Switzerland, a son of the late Rudolph and Bertha Frei Kuenzli and the husband of Zelda Sparks Kuenzli. He came to Lancaster in 1929 and had resided here since that time.
In 1967, he retired from Lancaster Press, Inc., after 38 years as a book trimmer. He had served in World war II from 1942 to 1943 as a member of the Army engineers.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Ernest J. and Randy Scott, both at home, and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Kaegi, Lancaster, and Mrs. Mary Bigler and Mrs. Marguerite Anderegg, both of Switzerland.
