~MY PHILP FAMILY~
Benjamin was the second son of Capt. Joseph & Mary Elizabeth (Philp) Laur and grandson of my great, great grandparents, THOMAS & ELIZABETH (BALTZELL) PHILP. The family legend goes that he joined his father and brother during the Civil War and after being scolded by his father, was given a gun and enlisted as PVT in Company K, 49th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 5 June 1863 at 14 years of age. He lost the sight in one of his eyes during the war.
Benjamin & Miranda were the parents of 11 children, one of which died young (Mary, twin to Samuel). Their children were Joseph, John, Florence, Hosea, William, Benjamin, Thomas, Charles, Ernie, Harriet, Clarence, and Mary.
