~MY PHILP FAMILY~
Joseph Laur was the son of Charles and Lucy Duane Laur. He emigrated to Massachusetts in 1833 and eventually settled in Jefferson Co., Illinois where he married Mary Elizabeth Philp on 29 Feb 1844. They had seven children: Charles T., Benjamin M., Laura, Harriet, James w., Mary E., and Elizabeth.
In 1861, he enlisted in Co. K Ill. Vol. Inf., under Col. Morrison, and was soon elected captain of his company. He took his oldest son Charles T. with him. They were in the battles at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and in the Red River expedition at Vicksburgh.
The settlement of Waltonville was originally named Laur for Capt. Laur.
