~MY PHILP FAMILY~
Thomas B. Philp was the son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Baltzell) Philp. He married Louisa (Unknown) and they were the parents of one child, Alonzo Thomas Philp. Thomas was a Sgt. enlisting in Company K, 49th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 30 December 1861 and was discharged on 26 August 1862 with "total constitutional disability". The 49th Regiment wass assigned to a brigade and division which served in the military operation in Western Tennessee under Brig. Gen. Ulyssis S. Grant. Joseph Laur, Thomas' brother-in-law was the company commander.
After the battle of Fort Donelson, Tenn., Thomas had severe stomach pains, shortness of breath, and began to bleed internally. Nevertheless, he marched with the troops to the southern border of Tennessee during the cold winter and fought in the Battle of Shiloh. He died from Bright's Disesase that he contracted during his Civil War Service leaving a pregnant wife. He is buried near his brother, James Ware Philp.
After his death, his widow, Louisa, married John R. Smith and the family lived in Rock Prairie Township, Dade Co., Missouri in the 1880 Federal Census. Alonzo Philp was born Oct. 23, 1863 in Illinois and died July 2, 1891 in Dade Co., Missouri in his 28th year of age.
