Shortly afterwards he was assigned to St. Benedict’s parish in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he ministered for 22 years before his election as Abbot on August 20, 1924, succeeding The Right Reverend Leo Haid, OSB. He was installed as Abbot on March 19, 1925, with the Most Reverend Michael J. Curley, Archbishop of Baltimore as officiant and celebrant of the Pontifical High Mass. During his tenure, he presided over the college’s greatest period of growth, building up the scholarship of the faculty and securing the academic prestige of the Abbey. In the monastery Abbot Vincent was determined that the monks' hours of prayer would be open to the public and, in particular, available to the students. In 1943, the monastic choir stalls were positioned in the sanctuary of the Abbey Cathedral, thus allowing full attendance by students and the laity in the Opus Dei ("the work of God").
In 1956, Abbot Vincent resigned his duties a superior of the monastery and president of the college, with the Very Reverend Walter Coggin, OSB, appointed as Vicar and Coadjutor to assist the Abbot-Ordinary. Abbot Vincent died of a heart attack while visiting family in Greensboro on November 5, 1959, found slumped over the steering wheel of his car on Greensboro’s Summit Avenue, Rosary and prayer book in hand.
He was buried in the Abbey Cemetery following Mass in his Abbey Cathedral. He was succeeded as Abbot-Ordinary by Father Walter Coggin, OSB. The college library, built in 1957, was renamed in his memory. (From the Southern Cross)
