Birth: Apr. 24, 1864
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Oct. 22, 1966
Saint Petersburg
Pinellas County
Florida, USA

He was raised on the old homestead. His first education was obtained at the country schoolhouse near his home and mostly by his own efforts and exertions until he was qualified for teaching. His father died when he was fifteen years of age and he worked on the farm until he was nineteen, when he attended Lebanon Valley College, also working on the farm during the summer. He graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1888 and took up the teaching profession. For two years he taught in the public schools of Dauphin County, was principal of Pottsgrove Academy in Cumberland County for two years, and then taught science at Lebanon Valley College. In 1891 he was appointed Superintendent of Schools at Williamstown, Pa., which position he held for nine years. In 1898 Mr. Gerberich ran for the Pennsylvania Legislature from the Dauphin County district on an independent ticket, losing by a scant 200 votes. He was later Superintendent of Schools at Royersford and Parkesburg, Pa. In 1907 he entered the steel business and became assistant superintendent of the open hearth department of the Midvale Steel and Ordnance Company in Coatesville, Pa. He then moved to Parkesburg, Pa., where he taught history and was assistant principal in the High School. He had been for sixteen years president of the Parkesburg Borough Council and was Acting Burgess for one year, then Burgess-elect. Was a local preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and at various times had supplied charges in the neighborhood. He was a Royal Arch Mason and Knight Templar and a member of Joppa Council, No. 46, R&SMM, at the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia. In the summer of 1923 he visited the ancestral home of the Gerberichs in Germany with his son. [History of the Gerberich Family in America]

Old Alumnus of LVC [Lebanon Valley College] Dies in Florida at 102: Albert Henry Gerberich, father of the Gerberich family history, died recently at the home of his nieces, the Misses Marion and Louella Batdorf, St. Petersburg, Fla. He was 102. He was born in West Hanover Twp., Dauphin Co., and was the oldest living alumnus of Lebanon Valley College. This was the first year he had missed the biannual Gerberich family reunion. Gerberich had been a professor of natural sciences at Lebanon Valley College; was superintendent of schools at Williamstown, Royersford and Parkesburg; was assistant superintendent of the open hearth steel plant of Bethlehem Steel Corp., Coatesville, and was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Lived with His Son: He had lived with his son, Albert Horwell Gerberich, the historian, in Bethesda, Md., until the son's death in 1965. Gerberich had been a consultant of Dr. Paul A.W. Wallace when he was writing the centennial history of Lebanon Valley College. He is survived by his nieces and several relatives in the Lebanon area. [Lebanon Daily News]
