Born in Hesse- Darmstadt, he came to America when he was seven years of age, and his earlier manhood was spent in New Orleans where he was married. He came to Collinsville, Illinois in about 1870 where he worked as a blacksmith.
He enlisted with Co. C, 49 Illinois Vol. Infantry at the age of 24 when he was a resident of Bridgeport, Washington Co., Illinois and was mustered in at Camp Butler (Springfiled, IL) on 30 Dec 1861, and serving throughout the Civil War until 09 Jan 1865.
He was a member of the Col. L.W. Shepherd Post 628, G.A.R. at Quincy, and died at the Old Soldier's Home in that city. He was survived by ten of his sixteen children.
