Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the war he was commissioned a Captain in the 2nd New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment and participated in all the battles of the peninsular campaign. In September 1862, he joined the 6th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment as Lieutenant Colonel and was promoted Colonel in April, 1863. Subsequently he was constantly in command of a brigade, on August 1, 1864, he received the brevet of Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers and was in charge of the defenses of the Washington capital. He joined the Army of the Potomac, participated in the overland campaign and had command of a provisional division in the Army of the Shenandoah. On October 19, 1864, he was seriously wounded in action at the Battle of Cedar Creek and later died from his injuries.
