Obituary
Gay Yvonne Mast Born to Benjamin and Mildred Mast of Laytonville, CA, September 8, 1937, at Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits, CA. On July 13, 2012, Gay passed away at the age of 74, in her home on Branscomb Road with her loving family present at her bedside. She was loved dearly by her children, numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gay grew up on her parent's ranch in Laytonville, CA, where she enjoyed riding her donkey Jenny and playing with her friends. As an adult she operated Gay's Unique Boutique and had also been a mentor /counselor to many people through the years that were involved with recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. Gay attended the Lutheran Church, Assembly of God, and Seven Day Adventist through the years. One of her favorite songs included "I'll Fly Away". At home she would sing "How Much is That Doggy in the Window" as her dogs would howl along with her. Gay is preceded in death by her parents Ben and Mildred Mast, Betty Campbell her sister, and her first husband Byron Coatney. She is survived by her three children: Dennis Coatney, Tammy Schmidt (both from Laytonville), and Debbie Macy of Fort Bragg, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and nephews. (An autobiography written by Karen Branscomb Milam of Gay's life will be posted at a later date in the Laytonville Observer). Services will be held on Monday, July 23, 2012, at 1 P.M. at the Willits Seventh Day Adventist Church with graveside services to follow at the Laytonville Cemetery. This will be followed by a memorial service at the Laytonville fire department which will be held for those who wish to share their memories of how Gay touched their life. Feel free to bring pictures to share. Anyone who wishes to make a donation may send it to in Alcoholics Anonymous in honor of Gay Mast.
