At the time the 1920 U.S. Census was counted for Speedwell Magisterial District, Wythe county, Virginia, J. Pierce Brown (looked like Brower on census) was living with his father-in-law Robert Landreth. He was working on the home farm as a farm laborer. He and Hazel (Landreth) had only been married about six months at this time. The census record showed that J. Pierce's father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Georgia.

He first married Hazel Brally Landreth Dec. 23, 1919 in Wythe county, Va. They had a son, James Pierce Brown, Jr. The marriage ended in divorce.

James P. Brown married second to Ella Belle Sanders.
