Ensign W. E. Blackwell, USNRF, was designated Naval Aviator #1428 in 1918. Was a Warrant Pay Clerk prior to aviation training.
Died due to a mid-air collision near NAS San Diego when he attempted to dive under the other aircraft, in a vain attempt to guide that plane to the ground in a controllable manner. Both aircraft crashed to the ground, with the other plane impacting on top of Blackwell's.
Had married Miss Kathleen Nugent O'Donnell on 02 April 1921 in Ventura County, Calif.
Note: Interment on 05 NOV 1921 in the Mausoleum
