Neil Doggett, age 83 of Numa, died Monday, October 23, 2006 at the Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa.
Neil was a devoted son, a loving husband, a caring father and grandfather, and a loyal friend in his youth and into manhood, he loved to hunt and trap with his father . An avid fisherman, he entertained family and friends on countless summer nights with stories by the campfires.
After a short stint in a support plant in Omaha, Nebraska, he left to serve in the United States Navy during WWII. Following the war he brought his dear Mary, back home to raise a family. He worked for several years at the Seymour Cleaners and later became owner and operator of the business. When permanent press garments forced him to close his doors he went to work at the McGraw-Edison plant in Centerville. His ability to "fix anything that is broke" served him well. When the plant moved on, Neil went to work at Carter Water where he remained until his retirement.
As a member of the Numa United Methodist church, he served for years as the song leader, church superintendent and lawn keeper. When the church was demolished, the bell that rang so many Sundays came to rest at this home. A dedicated member of the Numa American Legion Post 726. Neil reaffirmed his love of country and fellow man by his unselfish service.
Following retirement, you could find him playing cards, visiting with friends, or following his beloved San Francisco Giants. He spent countless hours helping those who could not help themselves. He never met a stranger and he was never at a loss for words. He loved to garden, working long hours even when his health compromised his mission. What he raised, he gave away to family and friends. "Hubbell's" laughter, kindness and generosity will long be remembered.
Neil is survived by his wife, Mary; three children, Margaret Irene Carter of Lincoln NE, Dennis Neil(Shrri)Doggett of Seymour, IA, Denise(Randy)Eddy of Centerville, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Amy(Rick)Allen of Redondo Beach, CA, Emily(Tony)Walsh of Iowa City, IA, Morgan(Clint)Collins of Bondurant, IA, Shannon and Rachel Eddy both of Centerville, IA; five great grandchildren, Dylan Walsh, Porter Doggett, Jordan Collins, Ava Collins and Cael Camenisch.
