Robert (Bob) E. Atkins, 83, died Sunday, July 30, 2006 at Hospice Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines, IA, in complete comfort and peace in the presence of family. He was deeply loved and will be missed. A graveside service will be held at Oakmont Memorial Park Cemetery in Lafayette, CA at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, August 13, 2006.
Bob was born the son of Robert and Florence Atkins November 29, 1922 in New York, NY. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area immediately prior to the start of the Great Depression and for financial reasons, the family relocated to Pasadena, CA where he spent most of his childhood and adolescent years. Upon graduating from high school he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. After the war Bob returned to the Los Angeles area and married Marjory J. Atkins (deceased). Bob
became an accountant with Chevron and retired in January 1980. One of the initial "Taft Group" employees of the early 1950's for Standard Oil, he relocated from Southern California to San Francisco working many years in the downtown building and retiring from Chevron's Concord office. He lived in Concord until 1962 and then moved to Moraga, where he lived for nearly 40 years. He made many life long friends in the company and in the Bay Area, as well as new friends in Des Moines, whom he cherished until the day he died. In his early retirement years Bob became an avid golfer and traveler within the U.S. having driven through all 48 of the lower states and visiting all 50. Both Bob and Marjory were very involved in the Moraga Historical Society for many years. It was one of their passions.
After Marjory's passing, Bob moved to Des Moines, in 2001 to be near family. He enjoyed canoeing, fishing, walking the bike trails and watching the sights from his high rise apartment at 3000 Grand.
Bob is survived by two children, David Atkins and his wife Sumiko Atkins of Des Moines, and Sara Carey and her husband Mike Carey of Livermore, CA; six grandchildren, Amy, Melanie and Jacob (deceased) Corrieo; and Robert, Christine and Kaori Atkins; and two great grandchildren, Maria and Vanessa Corrieo.
