Eli Merrell was an officer in the War of 1812. He came to Texas from the Carolinas and settled in Dallas County in 1844.
Land for the Merrell Cemetery was donated by Eli Merrell, Sr.
MARKER: U.S. Daughters of 1812 marker dedicated by John Cavit Chapter in March 1935.

Eli Merrell, his immediate family and some of his siblings, left North Carolina about 1827. Eli settled in Marion County, Missouri, where he established a ferry on the North Fabius River and a small settlement which was known as Merrellville. In 1844 he sold his Missouri holdings and moved to Dallas County, Texas, where he acquired considerable property before his death in 1849.
Eli sold his Missouri property to Captain Jeremiah Taylor who renamed the community after himself. Taylor Missouri is in northern Marion County at the junction of US Highways 24 and 61, is on the North Fabius River and directly at the foot of the west bluff of the Mississippi river.
Descendants of both Eli and his brother Levi still reside in northeast Missouri.
