Silas was born in Virginia, the son of William and Ann Myers. He was married to Sarah Perthena Perry, father of Lydia, John, James Artensa (Artie), Emmett, and Julius (Sherman). He was a farmer when they lived in Virgina, then a laborer when they moved to Gallipolis.

Silas served in the 33rd Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. He was injured and received a pension.
