Mass murderer also known as "Cockeyed" Cook due to a botched eye operation to correct a congenital defect. Committing numerous murders on over a several week spree, including the Mosser family, after carjacking the family, he forced them to drive to Joplin, Missouri. At approximately 2 am, Cook became alarmed by a passing patrol car, and shot all three children, aged 3, 6, and 8, and both parents and their dog, dumping their bodies into a mineshaft in the "Chitwood" section of town. The bodies were recovered. During his two week spree, he also kidnapped and bound an Oklahoma Deputy and stole his patrol car. Then he proceeded to kidnap and hold hostage Robert Dewey, forcing him to drive to California. Upon their arrival, Cook killed Dewey. Cook was later recognized by a police chief in Santa Rosaria, California, and captured. After standing trial for the Mosser family murders and receiving a 300 year sentence, he was tried in California for the Dewey murder, for which he received the death penalty. The penalty was carried out in the gas chamber in San Quentin Prison by the California Deparment of Corrections.
