Burrage B. "Bartolo" Welsh
Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: Oct. 26, 1920, Saint Kitts And Nevis
Death: Jan. 6, 2012
Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Burrage B. Welsh had all formal education in St. Kitts. His early career started as a school teacher but changed over the years to a skilled carpenter and tradesman. Although he traveled all across the United States, he eventually settled in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands in 1960. Because his acquaintances had difficulty pronouncing his name, he was known to many as "Bartolo".

Mr. Welsh was the father of five children and several stepchildren. He was truly a family man who carried out his paternal responsibilities with dignity. He believed that each one should be accountable for his actions, and tried to instill these ethics into his children. Utilizing his early calling as a teacher, he mentored his children in commitment to their cause and excellence in their undertakings. Further, he thought that everyone should live within his means and not be obligated to any man.

After moving to St. Thomas, Bartolo worked with Cifre Construction which evolved into Cifre Auto Parts, Inc. After his employment with Cifre, he went to work for Consolidated Auto Parts, Inc. and Nibbs Auto Parts, Inc. but became entrepreneur of Vl Auto Parts, Inc. Mr. Welsh's work ethics were above reproach; his knowledge of the vehicle parts industry was unmatched. He managed VI Auto Parts, Inc. until he retired at age 80 years. He is fondly remembered as the old man who added backwards and crossways but somehow still got the calculations correct.

Mr. Welsh cherished genuine friendship with those he considered his close, longtime acquaintances. One could hear the hearty laughter and see the pride when he was in their presence or having conversations via telephone. He would reminisce about his varied experiences with the guys and smiled about the incidences in which "men were being men".

Too often one wonders about the legacy and the public perception after one's departure. The legacy of Burrage B. Welsh will be that of a humane, humble individual who cared for his fellowmen and was always prepared to assist in times of need.

He is survived by his wife, son, 4 living daughters (and 1 deceased), 11 step children and many other relatives and friends

Special thanks to the staff of Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, Continuum Care, Dr. Luis Amaro and Labor Construction (Ericson Revan).
