CLUTE CAPTAIN, CREWMAN LOST

Freeport boat sunk near Port ArthurThe bodies of two Freeport charter boat company employes were recovered Wednesday from their capsized craft in about 35 feet of water in the Intracoastal Waterway at Port Arthur, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman in Sabine said. The bodies of Capt. Bobby Eugene Brooks, 37, of Clute, and deck hand Bill Chidester of Freeport, were found at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday by Dallas Domain, owner of Offshore Divers and Salvage Co. of Port Arthur, the spokesman said. One of the men's body was found in the Miss Brazosport's wheelhouse and the other crew member's body was in the berthing area. The Miss Brazosport, a 59-foot charter fishing boat owned by Freeport Party Boats Inc. sank about 4 a.m. Wednesday after capsizing in the wake of a tanker intering the Port Arthur harbor.Monroe Krumnow, co-owner and manager of the charter company, said the Miss Brazosport left Freeport about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for a 7 a.m. Wednesday charter in Sabine. The 35,000-ton tanker, Zapata Ranger, was headed for Port Arthur early Wednesday morning when it had to swerve to avoid a collision with the fishing boat, the Coast Guard spokesman said. The tanker reported to the Coast Guard that the charter boat had capsized in its wake after the near miss.Another spokesman with the Coast Guard's Port Arthur station said an investigation of the incident is now underway. No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.Coast Guard search and rescue crews placed a marker buoy on the sunken vessel Wednesday after finding the boat about 3 p.m., allowing the waterway to be reopened to ship traffic about 5 p.m.Krumnow said his company expects to begin salvage operations on the sunken craft today.Salvage operations are expected to cost between $12,000 and $ 15,000, he said. The Miss Brazosport was last appraised at $80,000, he said.Brooks had worked for the charter company for about four months, but had previously worked on shrimp and oil boats.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Freeport Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Cliff Natho of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating.Burial will be in the Damon Cemetery, with the Rev. Gilbert F.
