Sister Concepta Mertens, age 83, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Thursday, January 19, 1995, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 23, 1995, at Holy Family Convent Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Samuel D. Jadin, O.Praem. with burial in Holy Family Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Genevieve Mertens was born July 5, 1911, in Marshfield, Wis., daughter of the late William R. and Edna Abbott Mertens. She entered the convent in 1925 and professed her vows in 1929. Sister Concepta earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Norbert College, De Pere and a Master of Arts Degree from Mount St. Mary College, Los Angeles, Calif. Sister Concepta served as an elementary school teacher at Cambridge, Ohio; Santa Barbara, Calif.; Brillion, Cleveland, Oneida, St. Joseph and Sacred Heart, Manitowoc, Whitelaw, St. Aloysius, Kaukauna and St. Philip, Green Bay, Wis. After retiring from the teaching profession, she served as a homemaker at Antigo and Rhinelander, Wis., and helped with household tasks at Ozanam Home in New Berlin, Wis. Since 1988 she has been residing at the Motherhouse. She was a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; a sister, Lucy Nielson, Green Bay; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, John and Mary Ann Mertens, Raymond and Marie Mertens, Antigo, Evelyn Mertens, La Crosse, Muriel Gill, Sheboygan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 1995, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Holy Family Convent Chapel.
The Pfeffer Fuenral Home, Manitowoc, assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
