| Birth: | 1893 Georgia, USA | | Death: | Jul. 20, 1918, France | Lieut. killed in action France age 25 years. First soldier from Polk County, GA. killed in WWI.
Joe Brewster, Lieut. Joe Brewster's chum in France has sent the sad news to his home folks that he has been killed in battle. The news has not been confirmed by the War Department but the worst is feared. If true, popular Joe Brewster is the first Polk County boy to have given his life for his country and for freedom in the great war. His family have much sympathy in their anxiety and probable bereavement. (Cedartown Standard, Thursday, September 26, 1918)
Mr. J. G. Brewster, of Esom Hill has received the following letter and clipping giving an account of the death on the battlefield of his lamented brother, the brave young Lieut. Joe Brewster, which will be read with much interest here: Dear Sir: The Adjutant General has given me your name as the nearest relative (brother) of the late gallant Lieut. Brewster, of Co. F, 59th Inf., A.E.F. I am the father of the late Lieut. David M. Barry, of Co. E, 59th Inf., who fell with your brother at Chateau Thierry on July 20, 1918. My beloved son was killed at the same moment and by the same shell as Lieut. Brewster. It was many months before I learned the circumstances of my son's death, and it was only through the accidental discovery that a certain Private Doyle was present at the tragedy, and though wounded by the dame fateful shell had survived. I am inclosing you a reprint of Doyle's story which shows that your brave brother and my son were together on the battlefield, just returning from an official mission to the French artillery. I should very much like to hear from you and would greatly prize a photo of Lieut. Brewster ( will exchange with you one of David's.) With deep sympathy, I remain very sincerely your friend.
