Sergeant, Company A, 11th Maine Infantry
1st Lieut., Company E, 7th California Infantry

William Henry Broad was single and still residing at home with his parents in Brownfield, Oxford County, Maine, in 1860. The following year, on November 7, 1861, he enlisted in Brownfield for three years as a private in Company A, 11th Maine Infantry. Soon thereafter, Broad was promoted to sergeant, but within a few months he was discharged for disability on October 2, 1862. Broad then headed west to California to try his hand at prospecting in Calaveras County, subsequently enlisting at Campo Seco as a 1st Lieutenant in the Calaveras County Union Guards of the California State Militia on July 24, 1864. He volunteered for federal service and was mustered in on December 7, 1864, at the Presidio of San Francisco as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 7th California Infantry. He served as the company's adjutant under Captain Hiram A. Messenger at San Francisco and Drum Barracks, California, and Fort Mason, Arizona Territory. He survived the deadly epidemic that struck his Arizona post during the fall and winter of 1865-66. Broad departed Fort Mason with his company on May 12 and proceeded to Fort Yuma, where he boarded the Oregon on June 12 bound for San Francisco. He arrived at San Francisco on June 23 and was discharged at the Presidio on June 28, 1866. Broad remained in California, but not much is known about his activities until he appears in Kern County in the 1876 Great Register and 1880 census. In June 1880, Broad was single and operating a farm just outside Bakersfield in Kern County, where he was a member of Bakersfield's Hurlbut Post, No. 127, Grand Army of the Republic. William Henry Broad died on his farm about 1895 and was buried in grave 332-9-10 in Bakersfield Memorial Cemetery (now Union Cemetery), Bakersfield, Kern County, California.
