The son of Isaac and Lucy Ann Story, he volunteered for Federal service immediately after the bombing of Fort Sumter, South Carolina, and was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 27, 1861. He served a three month enlistment, and was honorably discharged on August 30, 1861 at Columbus, Ohio.
He then re-enlisted to fight the rebellion, be mustered in as a Private in Battery B, 1st Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery on October 8, 1861. He would go on to serve throughout the balance of the war in the field, and was honorably mustered out on July 22, 1865 at Camp Cleveland, Ohio.
On April 8, 1890, while residing in Kansas, he filed for a United States Army Invalid Veteran Pension (application #767294, Certificate #535824).
On November 17, 1916 his wife, Saviah J. Story Liston, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #1079059, no certificate).
His older brother Romulus A. Story, served in the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was killed in action during the Spottsylvania Campaign in May 1864.
