Elmer served in the Army in France during WW1 with Co B - Reg. 351 - 88th Div - Co B A.E.F.. He talked about coming in contact with mustard gas while he was in the war. .........My biological grandfather, Charles David, died when I was only 2 so I don't have any memories of him but when my grandmother married Elmer in 1949 he had never had children of his own so Grandma's grandchildren became his grandkids & he loved us very much, no one could ask for a better grandfather. When my brother John was born in 1952 my mother gave him the middle Elmer, it touched Elmer deeply....Some of my happiest memories of growing up is spending time on his farm near Garretson, SD. I spent at least a week every summer until I was married in 1960. In fact, in June of 1960 I took my brother John Elmer with me on the bus to visit Grandma & Elmer & my husband-to-be, Max, who had gone to his parents' home in Virginia to buy us a car he stopped in Sioux Falls to pick John & I up, we drove back to Rapid City together - a month & a half Max & I were married. Grandma & Elmer were there for our wedding on Aug. 6, 1960. The day of the wedding it hailed twice, once early in the morning & again in the afternoon (this must have been an omen because my husband claims it has been 'hail ever since') Grandma & Elmer had just bought a brand new car an Olds 88 - it received dents all over from the hail......Elmer gave me his first wife's 1921 wedding dress & small cameo necklace - I treasure these items & my memories of Elmer....he was truly a very special grandfather.
