Funeral of William L. Brode

Funeral services for William L. Brode, 35 years old, World War veteran and former baseball star who died Sunday at his home 117 Henry street, were held yesterday morning at SS Peter and Paul Catholic church with solemn requiem mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Benedict, assisted by Rev. Edward H. Roach of St. Patrick's church. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Taps was sounded at the grave by Harry D. Rolger of Fort Cumberland Post No. 13 American Legion, of which Mr. Brode was a member. The floral tributes were numerous.

The pallbearers were: Active -- Willam H. Marean, Clarence F. Schafer, Orman T. Hockman, Eugene Carney, Carl F. Schmutz and Bernard Harrison; Honorary -- William H. Baley, Geo. E. Jordan, John M. Rank, Conrad Felton, Henry T. Helker and Ambrose J. Mullan.

Among those from out of town who attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Mathews, of Syracuse, N. Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snow of Sharpsburg, Md.; Mrs. Martin Renner and two children of Hagerstown; Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Nichols of Youngstown, Ohio.

Cumberland Squad In Try-Out
Cumberland, Md., April 20. - The tryout squad of the Cumberland baseball team has reached the 50 mark. The club had its first practice game this afternoon. Some of the players who are trying for the team are Russell Diehl, Frank Lippold, Charles Lippold, George Geatz, John Marean, Will Rank, William Marean, Clarence Schaefer, all of the 1911 Cumberland team; Victor Mays, William Brode, Lawrence Volk, Beck and a number of others of last year's South Cumberland team, besides a long list of recruits from different parts of the city. Ed Rodabaugh, who played with Cumberland in the ol P.O.M. League and who has been working in the Baltimore and Ohio shops here for the last six months, will try his pitching arm for the locals this season.
