Elihu J. Coffin was born in New Garden, North Carolina in 1829. He, his brother and sister were left orphans in their youth.He was educated in the Friends school at New Castle, NC
When a young man Brother Coffin moved to Indiana, and afterwards to Marshall Co. Iowa where he met Miss Elizabeth Steward Carter, whom he married in 1859. to this union eight children were born. The wife and four children are gone before . The children now living are: Mrs. A J.Oblanger of Grand Junction, Iowa, Mr W.E. Coffin, Mrs. F R. Jaenke, and Miss Maude coffin of Jennings, There are also eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. An the spring of 1888, he with his family, moved to Jennings, where he has since resided.
Brother Coffin was a life member of the Friends' church until 1903, when he, with his children, joined the United Presbyterian Churchat Jennings, He always loved His church and its services, especially Sunday School, which he attended long after he was unable to hear anything that was said in class.
He was stricken with paralysis on saturday July 15, All was done that kind hands could do to make his last days comfortable. He knew his children almost to the end, and through unable to speak, he told by signs that he was ready to go. On Sunday Morning the Masters final summons came, and calmly and peacefully he passed to the Better Land where there is no sorrow.
